Saving Mr Banks seems to be a film that many people have passed over simply because it concerns the book and film of Mary Poppins.

It's the story of the author of Mary Poppins, P.L. Travers, reflecting on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney who wants to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen and Walt Disneys many years of trying to persuade her that he would do her books justice.

It's a brilliant film.  We learn so much about both of them that we never knew.

I've already watched it twice.

Staring Denzel Washington
First of all you aren't going to believe me when I tell you that I've watched the original 1960 film well over a hundred times.  I kid you not.

I was working as an usherette in the local cinema at the age of 15 when it was shown again in 1963.  In those days usherettes had to stay in the auditorium throughout the whole of the films and I therefore saw it over and over again for a fortnight's run.  But not only did I watch it at that time, but as soon as VCR recorders were created I bought the film.  I then also bought it on DVD when that came out.

It is one of my Top 10 list...

This film made for TV, now on DVD is well worth watching, especially if you love social history as I do.

The writers of the film were Victoria Wood (actress) and Nella Last who wrote the diaries.

I've watched this film 3 times, it's that good.

The Plot:

Victoria Wood stars in this World War II drama as Nella Last, a downtrodden wife and mother, whose life dramatically improves with the outbreak of war.

A new world opens up to her as she gets involved with the Women's Voluntary Service, helping her to forget her marital difficulties...
